Common refrigerator problems

Symptom Possible causes
Fridge warm, freezer cold Defrost system failure (frost blocking airflow), evaporator fan, damper control
Both sections warm Condenser coils clogged, condenser fan, start relay, compressor, sealed-system leak
Water on the floor Clogged defrost drain, water filter housing, ice maker supply line
Loud buzzing or clicking Fan blade hitting ice, start relay cycling, compressor
Frost buildup Door gasket not sealing, defrost heater or thermostat

Try this first

  1. Check the temperature settings. Aim for about 37°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer.
  2. Clean the condenser coils (behind the toe-kick grille or on the back) with a coil brush or vacuum. Valley dust and pet hair clog them fast.
  3. Make sure vents inside aren't blocked by food containers.
  4. Test the door gasket: close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the seal may be worn.
  5. Listen for the fans. If the freezer fan isn't running when the door switch is pressed, that's useful information for the technician.

Keep food safe while you wait

Keep doors closed as much as possible. A full freezer holds temperature longer than a half-empty one. Use a thermometer, and discard perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than two hours.

Built-in and high-end refrigerators

Built-in units are often worth repairing, but they need technicians familiar with those models. Mention the brand and model when you call.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?

Many refrigerators last 10–15 years or more. Repairs like fans, relays, defrost parts and thermostats are usually worth it; sealed-system (compressor or refrigerant) repairs on older, inexpensive units often aren't.
