Oven, stove and range repair
Whether it's gas or electric, an oven that won't heat or a burner that won't light usually traces back to a handful of parts.
Gas safety
If you smell gas, leave immediately and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 or 911 from outside. Don't use light switches, phones or appliances inside. Gas appliance repairs should be done by qualified technicians.
Common problems
Gas ovens - Oven won't heat but burners work: weak oven igniter (the most common gas oven repair; the igniter glows but doesn't open the gas valve) - Clicking burners that won't light: wet or dirty burner caps, misaligned caps, spark module
Electric ovens and ranges - Oven won't heat: burned-out bake or broil element (look for breaks or blisters), temperature sensor, control board - Coil burner not working: try swapping it with a same-size burner. If the burner works elsewhere, the socket or switch is the issue - Glass cooktop element stuck on or off: infinite switch or control
Any oven - Temperature off: test with an oven thermometer; many ovens let you calibrate in the settings - Self-clean lock stuck: often clears after cooling and a power reset (turn off the breaker for a few minutes)
When to call
Anything involving gas valves, igniters, wiring or control boards is a job for a technician. Have the model number ready; it's usually on a label inside the oven door frame or under the cooktop.
