Ice maker and water dispenser repair
No ice, tiny cubes, or a dispenser that only drips usually points to water supply, a filter, or the ice maker assembly.
Common causes
- Clogged water filter. Replace it on schedule (often every six months), especially with hard water.
- Water supply valve at the wall partially closed, or the supply line kinked behind the fridge
- Frozen fill tube, often caused by low water pressure or a leaking inlet valve
- Freezer too warm. The ice maker needs the freezer near 0°F
- Failed ice maker assembly or water inlet valve
- Ice jammed in the bucket or auger, often after a vacation when cubes fuse together
Try this first
- Make sure the ice maker's on/off arm or switch is on.
- Replace the water filter, then dispense a few gallons of water to purge air.
- Check that the freezer is at 0°F.
- Empty the ice bin and break up any clumps.
- Look for a frozen fill tube at the back of the ice maker. A hair dryer on low can thaw it carefully (unplug the fridge first).
When to call
If water isn't reaching the ice maker after these checks, or the unit is leaking, a technician can test the inlet valve and ice maker assembly. Leaks under a refrigerator can damage flooring, so don't wait long.
